Intercultural mediation means that you “filter out” the cultural component in a message, get the essence of it and make it comprehensible to the interlocutor.
Often a misunderstanding is not caused by words, but by what we call in Linguistics the “extraverbal communication” (gestures, tone of voice, mimic, etc.). Often these clues are not the same across different cultures.
What happens is that the brain deciphers such clues before we even consciously notice them. You may already interpret incorrectly that a person is being unfriendly while maybe it’s simply their tone of voice that is a bit rough.
When you misinterpret the communication of a person as unfriendly, you automatically react so. This may cause a corresponding reaction and now indeed, you have two people acting unfriendly due to a misunderstanding.
But the reality is (and I’m talking as a person who has traveled a lot), people tend to be good all over the world. They normally are open to help, they just need to understand or feel your need. I can help you to transmit it to them in a humble and friendly way.
